Overview
This page describes the changes made to the Attivio Platform installer as of Attivio Platform 5.6.2. These changes have the goal of simplifying upgrades within a major version (such as Attivio Platform 5.6) for end users.
The new installer is available in Attivio Platform 5.6.2 and later releases. In-place upgrade functionality is available when installing a later release on a host which already has Attivio Platform 5.6.2 or later installed.
Behavioral Changes
To simplify the process of migrating to the latest available Attivio Platform release, the Attivio installer now enables you to perform an in-place upgrade, preserving your existing installation's external modules and critical configuration files, when you install a new release on a host with an existing installation of Attivio Platform 5.6.2 or later.
When performing an in-place upgrade, you have the option to back up the existing version's installation, and can rollback to that version if the new installation fails for any reason. Once the new installation completes, you can delete the backed-up installation to reclaim disk space.
The table below illustrates the new installer's behavior and how it compares with the behavior of the legacy installer included in versions up through Attivio Platform 5.6.1:
Behavior | Legacy Installer | New Installer |
---|---|---|
Location of default Attivio Platform installation path | Version-specific (e.g., | Version-agnostic: |
Result of installing new Attivio Platform version on a host with an older version already installed | Creates parallel installation directories, each with its own configuration files, external modules, etc. | Performs an in-place upgrade if existing installation is Attivio Platform 5.6.2 or later; deletes older installation if it is Attivio Platform 5.6.1. |
External modules (installed via | Must be individually re-installed in newer version. | Automatically migrated to newer version's installation by in-place upgrade. |
Critical configuration files in older version's | Must be manually migrated to (or modified in) newer version's installation. | Automatically migrated to newer version's installation by in-place upgrade. |
The new installer still offers two types of installation: a Full installation which includes the Attivio Platform core and a selection of commonly-used modules, and a Core installation which only installs the Attivio Platform core and omits the additional modules. Documentation assumes the Full installation. See the Release Notes for each specific Attivio Platform release for a list of the external module versions included with that release.
Most of the Attivio documentation assumes that you have selected the Full option, with the core platform and external modules. Some options mentioned in the documentation may be unavailable if you select the Core option and omit the external modules.
